Body double

And speaking of politics…

Tuxedo Stan, a large tuxedo cat, made headlines as far afield as England when he ran for mayor in October’s local election – part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the need for a comprehensive cat population control program.

So what’s Stan’s connection to Wedgewood Park? Well, Stan’s a private cat and – at any rate – was sometimes too busy to attend the election’s big media events. Enter Wilson Boulevard resident Fijy, another tuxedo cat whom, during the course of the election campaign, attended a mayoral debate, a blessing, some invitation-only events – and who even appeared on several live TV spots. He even won on-air endorsements from Anderson Cooper and Ellen Degeneres.

Order of Canada awarded to Wedgewood Park man
Congratulations to Broadholme Lane resident Wadih Fares, who was awarded the Order of Canada this summer for his contributions to Nova Scotia as an entrepreneur, community leader and committed volunteer.
Wadih, a property developer, sits on the boards of directors of many community-shaping organizations ranging from Dalhousie University to the Halifax International Airport Authority to the QEII Foundation. As a member of the Pier 21 board of trustees, he pushed to make the site a museum. The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 would become the first national museum outside Ottawa.

Introducing Wedgewood Park’s

own Kayleigh O’Connor

Kayleigh O’Connor is an aspiring young artist from Wedgewood Park. Kayleigh first became interested in writing music aged 10 and has spent the past four years developing herself as a singer-songwriter. Her indie/pop music, has taken her to Toronto to record with Cary A. King. Meanwhile, she recently worked with international award winning singer-songwriter Nicole Witt and Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning producer Rusty Varenkamp.

This past year, Kayleigh made several trips to Nashville to work with Nicole and Rusty on a demo CD. During one trip, she sang in downtown Nashville.

Stay tuned to hear more from Kayleigh in the months and years to come.  And to listen to Kayleigh’s recordings check out http://musicnovascotia.ca/Directory/.

Provincial and Federal electoral boundaries under review
A September 2012 report on Nova Scotia’s electoral boundary review shows Wedgewood Park will be moved from the riding that currently represents our community and areas west of us (Bedford) to join in the next provincial election the communities east of us (Rockingham and Clayton Park) – making us part of the new District 9.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s review of electoral boundaries is also underway. This review should be completed in time for the 2015 federal election.

A new park near you?
Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes is an area of undeveloped crown land that sits in our neighbourhood’s backyard. As such, Wedgwood Park people have enjoyed easy access to this land for generations. The Halifax Northwest Trails Association is currently advocating turning this land into a park. If approved, the park will be called Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes (BMBCL) Regional Park.

So far, the association has organized two public meetings – in September 2011 and April 2012. Meanwhile, the HRM has published a webpage on the proposal and also hosted a well-attended public meeting on May 31 2012 – during which the park concept was well received. For more detailed history of the proposed park there is a blog entry by Chris Miller http://cpawsns.org/blog/protect-the-birch-cove-lakes

On November 9 2012, the Burnside News ran a story reporting that adjacent private property owners have stated that the HRM hasn't spoken to them at all regarding securing the park’s proposed boundaries.

The Bedford Watershed Advisory Board (http://www.halifax.ca/boardscom/bwac) has been given the mandate to make recommendations over the entire Birch Cove Lakes Watershed. This watershed contains more 15 lakes that mostly lie within the boundaries of BMBCL Regional Park – including Susies, Quarrie, Kearney, Paper Mill, Ash, Charlies and Cranberry Lakes to name some of the lakes included. The last five scheduled meetings for Bedford Watershed advisory have been cancelled. A water quality study report for these lakes is complete but has not yet been shared with the public. The report will likely shape decisions on further development in the BMBCP as well as further development permits for the area. Recommendations from this board will have direct impact on the type or number of additional development permits and BMBCL park planning.

And a new subdivision for Rockingham South?
An initial public information meeting was held March 21 2012 to discuss future uses of the more than 55 acres of land on the Dunbrack corridor adjacent to Tremont Park. Presentations were made by HRM staff as well as W.M. Fares Group, which is applying to develop the land. HRM has posted details of the meeting on its planning webpage www.halifax.ca/planning/Case17002Details.html

The proposal shows mixed use of the land including 48 single family dwellings; 146 townhouses; 9 mixed-use residential and commercial buildings varying in height from 6-8 storeys and containing a total of 828 multi-residential units – and 2 commercial buildings along Dunbrack Street. The proposal also includes connection to the local street network at the Farnham Gate/Dunbrack intersection, as well as connections at Knightsridge Drive and Wentworth Drive. Finally, the proposal includes parkland dedication focused on the existing Tremont Park.

Any resident with questions can contact Jillian Maclellan via phone (490-4423) or email (maclelj@halifax.ca) or District 10 councillor Russell Walker via phone (443-8010 or cell 497-7215) email (walkerr@halifax.ca)
